‘Secrets; Love’ sneak preview

Auditions for “Secrets; Love” are tomorrow! Just to get everyone excited – and give tomorrow’s actors a sneak peek of what they’re in for – here is a scene from the play.

SCENE 1: INT. THE SALEM HOME. SEPTEMBER 12, 2005, MORNING

MARCUS SALEM enters stage right and crosses to center stage, passing a TABLE and three CHAIRS. Behind the furniture is a DOOR. Otherwise, the room is sparsely furnished or decorated. Marcus ties his SHOES, zips up his JACKET and puts his KEYS in his pocket. There is a knock at the door. Marcus opens it and lets in ALEX and ABRAHAM. They greet each other good morning.

ALEX
Where’s Leila?

MARCUS
She just left for school. What’s going on?

Abraham and Alex sit at the table and Alex motions for Marcus to join them.

ALEX
We’re worried about you. Everyone understands that it’s been tough.

Marcus hesitates.

MARCUS
What about the carpool?

ALEX
Sit down!

Marcus sits.

ABRAHAM
Why are you being so disrespect?

ALEX
I just want to get this over with.

MARCUS
Diego is probably waiting for us!

ALEX
No, he’s not coming today.

MARCUS
Again?

ALEX
Again. Now Abraham, you start.

ABRAHAM
Marcus, you are a great brother-in-law –

ALEX
Get to the point, Abe. Listen, Marc, you have been beyond weird lately.

ABRAHAM
You so insensitive. Kidnapping just happen! This is a hard time for us. We just lost Rizalia.

ALEX
Is it hard living without her? I know Luz had a hard time going back to college after everything.

MARCUS
She would’ve lost her scholarship if she didn’t.

ALEX
Does Leila miss her?

MARCUS
Yes.

ALEX
Do you miss her?

MARCUS
Will you shut up! I’m sorry. I’m just agitated.

ALEX
No, really?

MARCUS
It’s been difficult.

ALEX
I can relate. I haven’t gotten laid in forever and I think I’m having another herpetic outbreak.

ABRAHAM
Too much information.

ALEX
It’s just a cold sore.

ABRAHAM
I want to speak to Marcus.

Abraham stands up and takes Marcus aside.

ABRAHAM
When you keep God in your heart, nothing but good can come. We will find those sons of bitches who take my sister and Marton. We will crush them and beat them senseless –

ALEX
Sure got a lot of God in that heart of yours.

ABRAHAM
– and rip off their testicles with our bare hands and brand them with hot iron –

MARCUS
Abe…will you promise me something?

ABRAHAM
What?

MARCUS
If anything ever happens to me, I want you to take care of Luz and Leila.

ABRAHAM
Marcus! Me, Perla – and Luis, too – we will all take care of them. God will watch over us. You just have to have goodness in your heart. Everything will be okay.

ALEX
We’re running late. Abe, get your car. And stop talking about violence or I’ll kick your old Filipino ass.

ABRAHAM
So sweet.

Abraham exits. Alone, Alex and Marcus feel awkward.

ALEX
So, how’s your department doing? I’m sorry. I can’t talk to someone whose wife just got abducted, it’s too weird.

MARCUS
I’m not looking for conversation, Alex. I have to go do something. Don’t follow me.

ALEX
Oh, my God. You’re going to commit suicide, aren’t you?

MARCUS
What?

ALEX
You jerk. Even if Luis and Luz are grown up, you’ve still got Leila to think about –

MARCUS
I’m not going to –

ALEX
You’re still a father, you selfish bastard! And what will they do when they find out Rizalia is dead?

MARCUS
What did you say?

ALEX
If they find out, sorry! If!

MARCUS
Get out of my house!

ALEX
I’m sorry! I just wonder what will –

MARCUS
Shut up!

Marcus hits Alex, who is stunned and runs out of the house. Marcus leaves.

LUZ (V.O.)
That was September 12, 2005. That was the last time my father was seen.
