Performing ‘Kookspeak’ Tonight; Preparing for ‘Before, After and Always’

So tonight I have the honor of opening for the legendary Reg E. Gaines, a Grammy- and Tony-nominated spoken word poet, writer and performer. I saw him last night with the amazing opening act Azeem, whose solo show “RUDE” will be part of the Downtown Urban Theater Festival (which my show “Secrets; Love” was part of last year) on March 14. Reg himself was amazing, performing with ease even after hurting his ankle pretty early into the show! He shared his artistic journey with us in what was basically a poet’s living retrospective, a Greatest Hits collection complete with clever commentary, live grooves from his band and his down-to-earth, Chilltown sense of humor. I’m super proud to have him as a mentor and to be working with him again!

Catch me performing “Kookspeak,” my one-woman show about people who live inside their heads (and about love, loss and hope), tonight at 7 pm at Art House Productions, 1 McWilliams Pl., Jersey City, NJ. Click here for tickets or pay at the door.

My next project will be “Before, After and Always,” part of the inaugural STAGEfest at the Loew’s. I will be holding auditions for the show (I need a male in his 20’s, basically, to be my leading man) at Art House. Performances will be at the Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre, 54 Journal Square (on Kennedy Boulevard), on March 23 at 3 pm and 7:45 pm and on March 24 at 2:45 pm. More details will be announced soon. If you’d like to audition, RSVP to the Facebook page here or drop me a line at summerhortillosa at gmail dot com.

If you’d like to know more about the show — it’s a two-person play made of three parts which correspond to (you guessed it) “Before,” “After” and “Always.” It’s about the feeling of endless possibility and hope when you and a casual acquaintance realize you could be something more (based off my short story “Good bye“), heartbreak (based off “Long Lost Love Song“) and an original piece, “Be Longing,” about how only we can decide how long our love will last us.
