Kookspeak

My one-woman show “Kookspeak” is a series of monologues from the mouths of people who live inside their heads about everything from delightful death fantasies and gravely serious hand-puppet conversations to the Most Annoying Girl in the World voice and performing at the Grammy’s with your true love, a FIFA World Cup star/YouTube phenomenon.

The show is made up of four monologues. You can click on the names to read the short story that inspired them — except for “Talk,” which was written especially for the show:

  • Something Inside That Head of Yours: A paranoid whose idea of fun is thinking up wacky ways to die imagines that a young man working at a new bakery is a serial killer, but falls in love with him anyway.
  • Totally Engaged: A woman finally meets a man she wants to marry. He’s perfect, except for one little thing – he doesn’t want her, a subtext she “hears” during all their conversations.
  • Talk: Street-smart Selena has mastered the Chilltown dating scene with two lethal weapons — the Most Annoying Girl in the World’s voice, and that of the Sexiest Female in the World.
  • Senses: A woman’s mischievous mind refuses to let her deny her love for her soulmate, sending her on a journey through different idealized lives with him until the lines between the perfection of reality and of her imagination are blurred.

The show premiered at the Art House Productions’ So Low Theater Festival in Jersey City where it was the top-selling show. It was also featured at the Jersey City, Land of the Freeform Festival in 2012. In February 2013, it was one of the opening acts for Grammy- and Tony-nominated writer Reg E. Gaines’s solo show, “The Last Celebrity.” The finale monologue, “Senses,” was be part of the Tri-State Arts and Music Festival in Hoboken in May 2013 and the Tachair One-Act Play Festival in Jersey City in February 2014. The entire piece was most recently performed at the Digable Arts Festival in Hoboken in October 2013.

“Senses,” a monologue from the show, will be part of the Tachair One-Act Play Festival on Friday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. alongside an excerpt from my new play, “Three Bites.” Click here for more info.
